The Importance of Community Engagement

Domestic abuse is not just a personal issue; it is a societal one. It affects individuals, families, and our broader community. It requires collective effort to combat it effectively. Community engagement is crucial because it creates a supportive environment where victims can seek help, and where preventive measures can be put in place. By involving various sectors of the community, we can drive awareness, education, and proactive intervention to tackle domestic abuse head-on.

Our Community Initiatives

  • Educating young people about healthy relationships and respect is essential. FREEDA collaborates with schools to:

    • Provide age-appropriate workshops and educational programmes that teach students about the signs of domestic abuse and how to seek help.

    • Empower students with knowledge about consent, boundaries, and respectful relationships.

    • Train educators to recognise and appropriately respond to signs of abuse among students, ensuring they can provide the necessary support and resources.

  • Awareness is the first step towards change. FREEDA offers general awareness training to:

    • Educate the public about the realities of domestic abuse, dispelling myths and reducing stigma.

    • Equip individuals with the knowledge to recognise signs of abuse in their communities and provide support to those affected.

    • Promote a culture of zero tolerance towards domestic abuse, encouraging community members to take a stand against it.

FREEDA offers awareness training and Lunch and Learn style presentations to businesses, community groups and government departments.

In our visit to you we will talk about our protection and prevention work in Jersey. We’ll also discuss the Domestic Abuse Law, the different types of abuse and how to spot them and what we can all do as a community to support victims and recognise signs of abuse.

We will be available for questions, advice and support during our visit to you, and at any point after, should you wish to contact us.

Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

  • Collaboration with partner agencies ensures a cohesive approach to tackling domestic abuse. FREEDA works with various organisations to:

    • Provide specialised training to island agencies on how to recognise and signpost domestic abuse cases sensitively and effectively.

    • Foster a network of support services that work together to provide comprehensive assistance to victims.

    • Develop protocols and best practices for inter-agency cooperation in responding to domestic abuse.

  • Health professionals are often on the front lines of identifying and supporting domestic abuse victims. FREEDA engages with the healthcare sector to:

    • Train doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers to recognise signs of domestic abuse and respond appropriately.

    • Support GPs to implement screening protocols in healthcare settings to identify potential abuse cases early.

    • Ensure that victims receive compassionate care and are referred to appropriate support services.

  • Workplaces can play a significant role in supporting employees who are victims of domestic abuse. FREEDA partners with businesses to:

    • Provide training for HR professionals and managers on recognising and responding to signs of domestic abuse among employees.

    • Provide advisory support to workplaces implementing policies that support victims.

    • Promote corporate social responsibility initiatives that raise awareness and funds for domestic abuse prevention programs.

  • FREEDA also offers bespoke training and workshops that can be tailored to align with your culture and endeavours. We can address emerging issues, relevant concerns and support local/international events.

These can include but are not limited to:

    • VAWG

    • Involving men and boys

    • The 4 R’s (Recognise, Respond, Refer and Record)

    • Catcalling and harassment

    • The impact of domestic abuse on the workplace

    • International Women’s Day

    • White Ribbon Day

    • Parent/Carer support

We are passionate about raising awareness of domestic abuse, educating the community and creating a change in attitudes that is effective and long-lasting. Everyone has a part to play in tackling and preventing domestic abuse, and we would be happy to tailor an initiative that is specific to your requirements and supports your Corporate Social Responsibility commitment.

By involving various sectors of the community - schools, healthcare providers, partner agencies, businesses, and the general public - we can create a multifaceted approach to tackling domestic abuse. Each sector plays a unique role in this effort, contributing to a comprehensive strategy that addresses the issue from all angles.

FREEDA believes that by working together, we can create a community where domestic abuse is no longer tolerated. Whether you are an individual looking to volunteer, a professional seeking training, or an organisation wanting to partner with us, there is a place for you in supporting FREEDA’s mission.
