Our History

FREEDA, formerly known as Jersey Women’s Refuge, was established as a Charity in 1986 and opened its doors in October, 1988. The creation of FREEDA was thanks to the commitment, determination and persuasive powers of our founding member, Rozelle Sutherland, MBE. She was supported in her amazing efforts by the Soroptimists International Jersey and FREEDA is very fortunate to have had the vision and understanding of such a strong and committed group of women.

Since then, FREEDA has grown and our services have expanded from the residential safe house to providing support to women in the community, a 24-hour helpline, 7 days a week, and Island wide engagement to prevent domestic abuse through education sessions in schools and training of professionals from different sectors as well as other charities.

In October 2023, FREEDA celebrated 35 years of supporting and protecting women and children fleeing from Domestic Abuse together with our Patrons, our staff and volunteer teams, and all our friends and supporters. The celebration also marked our rebranding from Jersey Women’s Refuge to FREEDA, Free from Domestic Abuse.
