Our Safe House
FREEDA have our secure Safe House, providing accommodation to women and children fleeing from domestic abuse, and a safe space for women who have been the victim of sexual assault/abuse regardless of whether DV is present.
Rooms and accessibility
We have 8 bedrooms in the safe house, each with an en suite for residents and their children to stay in. One of these rooms has been set up to be an inclusive unit, having a profile bed, electric rise recliner chair, and an en suite with an emergency cord should the resident need assistance. This room also has the availability for the room next to it to be used by a carer to sleep at the safe house, should the client require overnight care. The Safe House also has a wheelchair accessible entrance/exit to the property, as well as a lift for residents to use to move between the floors of the house.
Flat
We have a self-contained flat attached to the main safe house, which is a 1 bedroom property with a separate garden. This flat can be accessed by women with older male children (as we cannot have males over the age of 16 within the main safe house), or for women with dogs.
Pets
We understand that every pet is a member of the family, and we will do our best to accommodate pets within the Safe House wherever possible. A risk assessment will be undertaken to consider all factors, for instance if another resident has an allergy, what vaccinations the animals have, and considering their quality of life within the safe house. For example, we may not be able to house a larger dog if the owner works extended hours without having another person, such as a dog walker, assisting with the care of the dog. There may be other residents with allergies or fears of animals meaning pets may have to remain within the residents room and not access communal areas. For the times where we are unable accept the family pet/s we will work with residents to find a suitable alternative care option.
Age restrictions
We cannot house any males over the age of 16 within the main safe house. Males between the age of 16-18 may however reside in the self-contained flat with their mother. These are always considered on a case-by-case basis. For women over the age of 18, they will be offered their own room (if the space is available), if they move into the safe house with another female relative such as their mother. We cannot house individual women under the age of 18.
Communal Living
The Safe House is an independent communal living space. All residents have an allocated cupboard and fridge space to store their food. The Safe House includes a shared lounge, dining room, playroom, kitchen, garden and laundry facilities.
